Crushed Stone as the Foundation Layer
A compacted layer of crushed stone, often several inches deep, forms the structural base of a paver patio. This layer needs to be properly compacted in stages, since a loose or uneven base is one of the most common reasons pavers shift or sink later on.
Gravel for Drainage
Angular gravel allows water to drain down through the base instead of pooling under the patio surface, which matters especially in a rainy coastal climate where standing water under pavers can lead to shifting and erosion over time.
Sand for the Final Leveling Layer
A thin layer of coarse bedding sand goes on top of the compacted base, giving installers a smooth, level surface to set pavers into. Polymeric sand is often swept into the joints between pavers afterward to lock them in place and discourage weed growth.
