Standing in front of a mulch pile versus a stack of bags, it is not always obvious which option actually saves money. The answer mostly comes down to how much material your project needs.

How Bagged Pricing Works

Bagged mulch and soil are priced per bag, usually covering around two cubic feet each. It takes about 13 to 14 bags to equal one cubic yard, and the per-bag price usually reflects a premium for packaging and convenience.

How Bulk Pricing Works

Bulk material is priced per cubic yard and scooped directly into your vehicle, trailer, or delivery truck. Because there is no packaging involved, the cost per cubic yard is almost always lower than the equivalent amount in bags.

Where the Break-Even Point Usually Falls

For very small areas, such as a single small flower bed, bagged material is often more practical since buying a partial cubic yard in bulk is not always convenient. Once a project needs two or more cubic yards, bulk buying typically becomes noticeably cheaper.

Factor in Delivery and Hauling

Bagged material is easy to fit in a car trunk, while bulk material usually requires a truck, trailer, or delivery service. If you do not have a way to haul loose material, delivery fees should be factored into the bulk cost comparison.

Convenience Has a Value Too

Bags are easier to store leftover material in and simpler to carry to hard-to-reach areas of the yard. For some projects, the convenience is worth the higher per-yard cost, even if bulk would technically be cheaper.
