The Sabal palmetto is South Carolina's state tree and the most commonly planted large palm across the entire SC coast. It can eventually reach 40 to 65 feet tall with a dense crown of arching fronds. It is extremely cold-hardy, tested down to Zone 8a, and highly salt-tolerant, drought-resistant once established, and nearly pest-free. Growth rate is moderate, typically 1 to 2 feet of trunk per year once established.

What makes the Pindo palm different?

The Pindo palm has blue-green feathery fronds arching outward in a graceful fountain shape. Maximum height is typically 15 to 20 feet in the Carolina coastal climate, making it a much better fit for residential applications where you want a palm that stays in scale with a one-story home. The Pindo produces clusters of orange-yellow fruit, giving it the common name jelly palm. Cold hardiness is excellent, rated to Zone 7b.

Which palm is better for a small Murrells Inlet yard?
