Mulch is not one-size-fits-all, and swapping playground mulch for garden mulch, or the other way around, can create real safety and performance problems. Here is what sets them apart.

What Playground Mulch Is Made For

Playground mulch, often called engineered wood fiber, is manufactured and tested specifically to cushion falls under swing sets, slides, and climbing equipment. It meets safety standards for fall height protection that regular garden mulch is not designed or tested to meet.

What Garden Mulch Is Made For

Garden mulch is designed to suppress weeds, retain soil moisture, and improve the appearance of planting beds. It comes in a range of colors and materials, including dyed wood mulch, natural mulch, and pine straw, none of which are certified for fall protection.

Why the Two Should Not Be Swapped

Garden mulch used under play equipment does not compress and cushion the same way certified playground mulch does, which can reduce fall protection. Playground mulch used in garden beds, on the other hand, is often more expensive than necessary and is not formulated for weed suppression the way garden mulch is.

Depth Requirements Differ Too

Playground safety surfacing typically requires a specific minimum depth based on equipment height, while garden mulch depth is more about moisture retention and weed control, usually two to three inches.

Ask for the Right Product by Name

When ordering, specify whether you need certified playground mulch or standard garden mulch, since they may look similar in a bulk pile but are not interchangeable for their intended uses.
