Walking into a landscape supply yard for the first time can be a little overwhelming once you see how many mulch colors and soil types are actually available. Here is a plain-language guide to what each one is best used for.

Dyed Mulch: Black, Brown, and Red

Dyed mulches hold their color longer than natural mulch and are popular for front beds and areas near the house where a consistent, bold color is the goal. Black and brown tend to blend into most landscaping, while red is often used to make plantings stand out.

Natural and Cypress Mulch

Undyed, natural mulch breaks down a bit faster than dyed options but tends to look more organic and blend well in wooded or naturalized areas. Cypress mulch is a popular natural option known for holding together well and resisting washout during heavy rain.

Pine Straw

Pine straw is lightweight, spreads quickly over large areas, and is a common choice under trees and in naturalized beds throughout the Grand Strand. It breaks down faster than wood mulch and typically needs to be refreshed more often.

Playground Mulch

Playground mulch, sometimes called engineered wood fiber, is processed differently than garden mulch to meet safety standards for fall protection under swing sets and play equipment. It should not be substituted with regular garden mulch in play areas.

Topsoil, Garden Soil, and Compost

Screened topsoil is used for leveling yards, filling low spots, and as a base layer under other soil. Garden soil blends are formulated for planting beds, while compost is best mixed in to boost nutrients rather than used as a stand-alone growing medium.

Choosing the Right Material for Your Project

Matching the material to the job, rather than picking whatever is closest to the entrance of the yard, makes a real difference in how a project looks and holds up over time. Staff at a good supply yard can walk you through options based on the specific area you are working on.
