A common question that Lisa gets here at C-Scapes is how much mulch do I need?
The amount of mulch you will need for your landscaping project will depend on the size of the area you are covering, the depth of mulch you want to apply, and the type of mulch you choose.
As a general rule of thumb for the amount of mulch, you will need:2 to 3 inches of depth for a new bed
1 to 2 inches of depth for an established bed
To calculate the amount of mulch you will need in cubic yards, you can use the following formula: (length of the bed in feet x width of the bed in feet x desired depth of mulch in inches) / 324 = cubic yards of mulch needed.
For example, if you have a bed that is 20 feet long and 10 feet wide, and you want to apply 2 inches of mulch: (20 x 10 x 2) / 324 = 1.2 cubic yards of mulch needed.
Keep in mind that this is an approximate calculation and you should always purchase a little more mulch than you think you'll need, as it's better to have extra than not enough.
It's also worth noting that different types of mulch have different coverage rates, so if you're using a different type of mulch than the one used in the above example, be sure to find out how much coverage you get per cubic yard of that mulch.
